Overview

## What a Barnett's home offices project actually covers.

What it is

Design and installation of bespoke home offices — fitted desks (single or partner), integrated file and book storage, cable management, monitor and printer bays, acoustic panelling where needed, and coordinated decorating and electrics.

Who it's for

Homeowners who work from home permanently, or who need a serious home office alongside an office day-job — solicitors, consultants, accountants, creatives, business owners. Also parents who want a dedicated study space for older children or teenagers.

When you need it

When the kitchen table has become the office and it's no longer working. When a spare bedroom needs converting into a study without losing the guest bed. When a loft or garden room needs fitting out as an office from the studs.

Why it matters

Because the right home office does more than look tidy in photos — it changes how the room feels at the end of the working day. Cables hidden, screens on a matched line, printer accessible but not visible, books actually shelved.

What goes wrong

## The cost of getting this wrong.
Home offices go wrong when they're specified from a photo of someone else's office instead of from how you actually work.

Risks if ignored

- —Desks fitted at 720mm because 'that's the standard' — often 20–40mm too low for someone tall, killing your back after six months.
- —Cable runs hidden behind fixed panelling, meaning any future kit change requires disassembly.
- —Printer bays sized for last year's printer, unusable when you upgrade.
- —Bookshelves rated for the weight of paperbacks, sagging under legal or reference titles within a year.
- —No acoustic treatment in a room with hardwood floor and glazed doors — every call sounds like it's in a bathroom.

Common mistakes

- —Fitting the desk before deciding whether the monitor is on an arm or on a stand — it changes the depth requirement.
- —Buying a beautiful chair without measuring whether it clears the desk return.
- —Forgetting that a fitted office needs sockets in the exact right places — you can't move them later without disruption.

Our process

## How a home offices project runs, step by step.

- 01

### Working session
Charlie visits, we sit in the room and talk through how you actually work — what's on the desk, what's on the shelves, what's plugged in, who else uses the room.

- 02

### Design & quotation
Sketched layout with dimensions, materials, cable-management strategy, socket count and integrated storage, followed by a fixed itemised quotation.

- 03

### First-fix electrics
Where new sockets, data or monitor arms are needed, we coordinate the electrical first fix so cables run behind the joinery, not over it.

- 04

### Workshop build
Desk, cabinet carcasses, shelving and door fronts built off-site in the workshop.

- 05

### Install & scribe
Units delivered and scribed to the room, monitors mounted, cable management terminated, drawers and doors adjusted.

- 06

### Handover
Full working walk-through — you set up the machine, we check everything's exactly where you need it before we sign off and hand over the guarantee.

Benefits

## What you actually get from Barnett's Bespoke.

### Desk height set for you

Standing- or sitting-desk height chosen with your actual chair, screen and posture in mind — not a generic 720mm.

### Cable management as an actual design decision

Grommets, cable trays, and hidden channels planned in — no bundle of cables snaking down the wall.

### Storage that fits your library

Shelves rated for the books you actually own, not paperbacks. Filing drawers sized for A4 hanging files, not stationery.

### Acoustic treatment where needed

Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels integrated into the joinery for rooms where calls and video conferencing matter.

### One trade, no follow-up

Electrics, cabinetry, painting and installation coordinated under one contract — you don't project-manage three separate people.

### 12-month workmanship guarantee

Standard on every fitted office we build.

In detail

## The specifics behind the home offices.
Materials, methods, variations and the things that actually decide whether the finished job holds up over the decade after we hand it over.

### Types of home office we fit
Full-room fitted offices in a converted bedroom or study, wall-run desks with integrated storage in a landing or box room, garden-room and loft-conversion fit-outs from bare studs, partner desks for two people working in the same room, and library-style fitted offices with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a ladder.

### Materials and finishes
Solid oak or walnut desk tops for hardwood finish, painted MR-MDF or ply for shaker-style cabinetry, leather or linoleum inlaid desk pads for writing and mouse use, brass and bronze ironmongery, and integrated LED task lighting on movement or touch control.

### Electrical and technology integration
Cable management channels, monitor arm mount points, integrated USB and data outlets, dedicated circuits for high-power equipment, in-desk grommets, printer bay ventilation, and (where the room is used for video work) blackout or acoustic considerations.

### Home office as a serious workplace
The single biggest difference between an office you're happy to work in for 8 hours and one you're not is the small stuff — desk depth, monitor eye height, cable tidiness, chair clearance, light quality. Bespoke joinery is the way you get all of them right at once.

FAQ

## Answers to the questions we're asked most.
Straight answers on cost, timing, guarantees and coverage — no marketing filler.

Request Estimate 07460 096137

How much does a bespoke home office cost?A single-user fitted desk-and-storage run typically £3,500–£8,500. A full-room fitted office with library and integrated electrics typically £8,000–£20,000+ depending on materials and complexity. Fixed itemised quotations after a site visit.

How long from order to installation?Typically 4–8 weeks from signed quotation to install, with the install itself running 3–10 days depending on scale.

Can you build a home office into a garden room?Yes. We can either fit out an existing garden room or build it from scratch — see our Garden Rooms service — with cabinetry integrated from day one.

Can you accommodate standing desks?Yes — either fixed at standing height or with a sit-stand mechanism integrated into the desk build. We'll advise on the mechanism at the design stage.

Do you handle the electrics?Yes — we coordinate a certified electrician for any new sockets, data or lighting circuits so cabling runs cleanly behind the joinery.

Can you match the office joinery to the rest of the house?Yes — painted finishes are done on site, and profiles are matched to your existing skirting and architrave for continuity.

Do you cover the whole of Hertfordshire for home offices?Yes. Barnett's Bespoke works throughout Hertfordshire, into north London and southern Bedfordshire — including Buntingford, Bishop's Stortford, Stevenage, Hertford, Ware and Hitchin. We're based at Great Hormead Hall, Buntingford, and travel from there.

Are you insured, and what guarantee do I get?Every project is covered by £1,000,000 public liability insurance and a 12-month workmanship guarantee. Charlie Barnett holds a Level 3 City & Guilds NVQ in carpentry and joinery, a CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card, and is a BM TRADA registered fire door installer. We're also a Trust a Trader member with a 4.98/5 rating.

How quickly can you start?Larger projects are usually booked four to eight weeks ahead. Small joinery jobs and single-day repairs can often be scheduled sooner. Contact us with a rough scope and postcode and we'll come back with a realistic start window.
